Vtg Motorola 700 Ranger Portable AM Radio Antenna 6P34E Untested AS IS

Here is a rather beautiful Motorola vintage radio that has quite a few Vacuum tubes inside :)  It does not have the AC cord with it but it says inside it can run on 117vac or from some sort of battery (something strange!)
You can see the battery connections on the photos.
I am reluctant to test this because some online people say that its wisest to use a variac or other soft start device to power on these old devices.  You might also be more knowledgeable than I, and want to check fuses or capacitor function before turning it on.  I am offering it AS IS, please see photos
This looks pretty nice, it is not perfect, you can see that the gold fine-hole grill on the front is gently pressed in maybe 1mm in 2 sections, not super bad but it is there and you might not be able to see it on the photos.
DIALS: these feel GOOD and free and smooth, not corroded.  THis lived in eastern washington so its dry there and corrosion not much of an issue :)
